a tradition of chains~

 Traditions
 are the guideposts
driven deep in our subconscious minds.
 The most powerful ones
are those we can't even describe
 and aren't even aware of.

~let the festivities begin~

what once started long ago
as a small chain to go round a yule tide tree
has now turned into

endless circles
linked together
stretched far and wide
throughout our home

every year it gets bigger and bigger

when i think of
TRADITIONS
i think of this quote

I don't believe people
are looking for the meaning of life
 as much as they are
looking for the experience of being alive.
 Joseph Campbell

i want my littles to live
to experience
to create memories
to start traditions
to honor celebrations
to know what it is like to fully live each day
embracing every moment upon them
to learn now
and always
to take with them as they grow
the meaning
the beauty
of enjoying life
to remember times spent together
and maybe just maybe
as they get older
and start families of their own
they will
without even thinking
instill such within their own
start doing
cause its there
lying deep in their mind

What a beautiful post...tonight I have finished putting up the tree with my family - a really important ritual that is especially important to my youngest daughter. Next year, Georgia will be 18, and I am conscious of time slipping by and that these moments are so very precious. I hope that we have created those special memories and traditions that will carry them both through their lives...

Sounds like the paper chain to end all paper chains!

Creating meaningful traditions with the littles builds memories for their future. They will remember.

Great job!

It's funny how once children enter the picture tradition becomes more important. Last year I made an advent calendar for the Peanut to open every day. We'll be hanging filling it and hanging it up today. It's all about those good memories when it's all said and done.

I remember making chains... so much fun.. they would trail all over the house... I also remember making popcorn and cranberry strands with my kids when they were young... I think my favorite as a kid though were the oranges covered with cloves... My fingers always ached after but I loved the smell

The words that are so special are "do we get to....._____________, like we did last year and hear their Mother, my baby say....of course, we always will, just like when I was a kid."

What a beautiful way to view "traditions" instead of the rote, forced ways of acting and being that we all get stuck in. I'm going to keep re-reading this for inspiration :)

Lovely quote. Traditions are a wonderful way to experience the holidays and pass on the joy of Christmas...that goes way beyond the toys and "stuff"...to our children.

I love this! Last year my little Grandaughter started a chain for us and this year I hope she comes to add to it! I think we may add popcorn stringing to the mix as I think she is old enough to handle the needle safely this year. That one though I'd like to leave out in nature for the birds so she has an idea to include them in the tradition, along with the cranberries, bits of suet, and toasted bread.
Traditions are the stuff of living and I love embracing them.
You've brought something to the Feast Table that we all need to be reminded of from time to time Dear Heart and I thank you deeply for it!
Happy and Joyous Holidays...

i think this is what i love best about the holiday season: reconnecting with old traditions/warm memories and creating new ones.

and YAY! The sun is shining here ... for now! Happy December - i just pulled out the advent calendar - one of my favorite holiday traditions :)

My son and I just finished decorating today. We've our traditions here as well....like my now famous village which I add something, however small, to each year...and ornaments on the tree in honor of our deceased pets. My three little birdies always have a prominent place.

My hubby and me were just talking about chains the other evening - as we were watching "Elf." How wonderful that you are creating traditions with your family and teaching your littles about them so they may one day do the same with their own littles. We have no children (except for furry babies), but we try to create our own personal traditions that we can enjoy. We always save our "1st wedding anniversary" ornament until the very end and hang it up together. And we do other things, like get dressed up and see "The Nutcracker" performed live with a ballet and orchestra. :) Theresa

FW - it's lovely to encourage little ones to live each day; to celebrate the moments; to discover the extraordinary in the ordinary. Special rituals and celebrations are important and they will continue to be reminded of them and add to them, and renew them in their own way as they take their path through life. Its a wonderful approach to it all that you have...go well
