"You stand up for what you believe in, even if it gets you in the way of what others think..."

My photo
if i could use one word to describe my life SERENDIPITY seems to fit the space... i stumbled upon my husband during a time i shouldn't have and my story goes on from there... constantly falling or stumbling upon remarkable gifts and people who bring fortune to our lives... when we fall we learn and strive toward the next step.

something to sit on~

i thought i'd pass this tid bit along
as you never know
who or possibly when
{hopefully not anyone...but reality will prove my desire wrong}
someone or you may be in a similar situation

as most of you know
i was hospitalized last year
with that came
an overly exceeding amount of doctor visits
which leads to an overly exceeding amount of
BILLS

thankful we have had medical insurance
through all of this

monthly we were paying a nice
400-500.00 a month
from my lovely adventures

 in feb of this year
we forked out almost 6,000.00
to pay of ALL of my remaining bills

sickened by the money gone
but beyond RELIEVED
that i would not be a slave to these bills no more

WELL...here's the interesting part

tuesday i had to have my annual
and i handed the receptionist my debit card
to pay my now 35.00 co~pay

she asked me to hold on a minute
while she picks up the phone
i look down to see
"patient balance" 120.00
{i'm thinking...what in the world is this}
she says a few words
hangs up the phone
and says
you don't have to pay your co~pay
you have a credit with us
when you are done
go speak with the billing department

so annual done
i make my way to the billing office
say i guess i have a credit
but what from

she said YOU OVERPAID
insurance has been processing claims
and i guess you were no longer responsible

i look at her and said
SO...DO I GET A REFUND
OR ARE YOU JUST GOING TO
HOLD MY MONEY???

she looks at me and says
"oh, you would like your money"

WELL YES...YES I WOULD

so refund is in the process

120.00 to be coming our way

well this got me thinking
on my way home

HOW MANY OTHER DOCTORS
DID I OVER PAY

long.story.short

i made many phone calls the last few days

NEUROLOGIST: 60.00
NEUROLOGIST: 30.00
RHEUMATOLOGIST: 60.00
CARDIOLOGIST 30.00

this is as far as i got
before deciding i would pick back up on monday

each one that i called and asked them
if they would kindly go into my account
and see if i had a credit sitting with them
acted as if i had gone of the deep end
only to come back and say
"oh, well yes you do"
and me saying
COULD YOU PLEASE
SEND THAT BACK TO ME

crazy

i was so overwhelmed last year
and could not keep up with the endless
amounts of papers that were rolling in
i did not check
i just paid what said paid
and when i went for office visits
and they asked for my co~pays
well i paid my co~pays

so lesson learned

PAY
C.L.O.S.E.
ATTENTION
to your
INSURANCE BENEFITS

once you have met your
outrageous deductible
{which mind you...i pray none of you do}
but if so
remember
once they start paying at 100%
you are usually then
not liable for ANYTHING
meaning
DO NOT PAY YOUR CO~PAY
have them verify
before you hand over your money

and the not so funny thing is

I DON'T KNOW
IF I WOULD HAVE EVER SEEN THAT
MONEY HAD I CALLED

because a few of those doctors
i wiped my hands clean of

so a year later
they are going to pay me

NICE HUH!!!

Glad you spotted it! Much better that the money be in your pocket than in theirs!

so glad you caught that...

and truly, i can't wrap my head around a country that can spend billions killing other folk in other countries and yet not take care of their own people's healthcare.

but apparently that makes me a socialist...LOL.

B-nice outcome but I agree with SS - just how many people who really need the $ miss out - bit of a sad world really. Go well and rejoice in the fact that it worked for you. B

Yes!!! Yes!!! Pay close attention to your bills. Also ask for an itemized bil and look at the materials and supplies used in your care. Did you really use them? Hospitals are subject to Corporate Compliance. Over-billing, wrong billing and improper billing have to be rectified. They are punishable by law and the hospital may be fined. As for doctor's bills, I always pay for insurance settlement. Thankfully, the doctor's offices send their bills after the insurance has paid. The insurance should also send you a Benefit statement. How much they were billed, how much was covered and how much remaining balance you are responsible. Sigh, hospital bills. My late sister's medical bills exceeded PHP10,000,000. The insurance only paid a measly few thousands. We had to pay everything else - in cash!!! Or else they would withhold care. That's the way it is in the Philippines. Every time we looked at the hospital bills, there were always materials and equipment that were never used and never credited. They were minimal but still, we needed every centavo back.

I love that that they have to pay you now...almost like a reward for being free of them :)

I'm happy for you in so many ways! Maybe use it to do something fun for the whole family!

I love finding extra money - especially if it is mine! So happy to know that a person noticed and alerted you to the credit situation!

Well, I am happy that you have recovered your funds - but unhappy about the way that you had to discover it. :( Such is the way of insurance and physicians these days...sigh.

Girl I have had doctors bill me so many times for things I should not have been billed. I learned from taking care of my mother over a decade ago to always check the E.O.B from the insurance company. Luckily now-a-days it's easy because most insurance companies list the claims online and you immediately know what you are responsible for. I have my own theory that these doctors know too.....they just prey on the fact that most people just don't know the system. As an aside, you know you may be able to claim those medical expenses on your taxes. My parents did that.
