WISH
Life is a coin.
You can spend it any way you WISH,
but you can spend it only once.
Francis Bacon
~wishing bread~
the traditional recipe
on winter solstice~yule eve
gives each a chance to roll their wishes
into a sweet festive holiday sticky loaf that pulls appart by hand
as wee littles create their own balls out of dough
have them think about
what they wish for
what they are dreaming wanting and hoping for to come to be
their seeds then shall be planted
on the longest night
to grow just the same as them
originated from circle round
preheat oven 350 degrees
~dough~
2 tbsp yeast
1/3 c warm water
sprinkle of sugar
1c milk room temp
1/2 c brown sugar
4 tbsp butter
3 eggs beaten
1 tsp salt
41/2~51/2 c flour
~glaze~
1/4 c butter
1/4 peacan or walnuts
MIX:
yeast in water, add sugar
allow to sit and work its magic
wait for it to bubble and foam
MIX:
milk, sugar, butter, eggs and salt
ADD:
yeast mixture to wet ingrediants above
STIR:
flour {1 cup at a time...until stiff}
into wet ingrediants above
flour surface,
knead dough until smooth and pliant
oil a bowl,
put dough inside covering it withthe oil,
cover with moist towel,
let rise till doubled in size
GLAZE:
melt butter and brown sugar
together in a pot on stove
butter bundt pan
pour 1/2 glaze into pan
add nuts
have littles tear off golf size bits of dough
and as they roll
have them once more think about their wishes
i prefer silence for this
though feel free to share outload
{they can add a raisen or dried fruit bit tucked inside each ball to represent each wish...mind you though they will not find such piece once the bread has been bake...so give warning if they want ot go searching}
THEY JUST HAVE TO HAVE
BELIEVE
IN THEIR
WISH
AND
THAT THEIR
WISHES
WILL COME TRUE
lay half the balls of dough
evenly around they bottom
pour 1/3 glaze over dough in pan
lay remain balls of dough into pan
and add the rest of the glaze
cover once more with towel
let rise until about 80% doubled
bake 45 mins
remove
let cool for a few moments
serve warm
~maybe you will create wishes into your bread this day~

Hi Honey,
Thank you very much your lovely comments! :-)
I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It has been a busy time for me with work commissions.
Wishing bread sounds wonderful. I have never heard of it before. I love old traditional recipes... I will be making some bread for sure this Christmas.
I have a Santa wish list! ;-D
Magic blessings and love to you and your family, this Winter Solstice!
Hugs,
Jo. xx
This sounds wonderful! It reminds me of the traditional "12th Night Cake" with objects baked in. I"m going to make it this year and I'll put the recipe. I think I'm going to have to make this recipe too, thank you Faerwillow :)
fantastic recipe and family ritual. We did something similar with oranges and cloves last year, studding our oranges with wishing cloves.
Thank you for all your lovely comments! And thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe and tradition - a ritual even more special when the whole family is involved. Have a wonderful weekend. x
Hello, beautiful Faerwillow!
I love holiday baking, and this sounds like a wonderful tradition to start. I especially love the idea of hiding a bit of something with in the dough to represent a wish. Whimsy at its delicious best! We go bonkers for bread over here, so will definitely give this a go.
Hope you are well and merry and feeling the holiday spirit!
xoxo

Splendid idea, I love such inspirational ideas, and that it includes food. Ah, bliss! :)
Oh look at that little fellow sitting atop your post. He is adorable.
A good message here...
I'm going to try this...and then I'll wish upon a star, too, for extra luck!
FW - love the Francis Bacon quote - so true that we have but one life and can choose to spend it as positively and creatively as we wish. Go well. B
I love this... I am hoping to go and see my grands before christmas or shortly after.. I think we will have to make some wishing bread... they willl love it...
oh how i love this (isn't circle round the most marvelous book?)
baking with yeast is one of those things that terrifies me (along with sewing machines)...but perhaps it's time to face that fear....;)
